Tucson Success Stories: Nick Letson

“When I was 12 i heard my dad’s voice on the radio. He was reading the news; that inspired me. When I was 19 I met a girl, she was an illegal immigrant and we dated for years. That made me want to speak–with her, her family, and the Tucson community–Spanish. So I went to Argentina and learned the language.

In half a year’s time, I got back to Tucson. That girl was married to another man. That made me sad, but things got better. Back in Tucson, now a 20-whatever, I was published for the first time. My article about a 23-year-old’s pregnancy riddled with cancer ran on the front page of the Arizona Daily Star, Sunday, Father’s Day. I’m now an apprentice reporter at La Estrella and asst. Spanish editor at El Independiente. I graduate in December and I have no money to eat right now.” -N. Letson

Natasha Stagg: What are you up to lately?

Nick Letson: I’m writing for La Estrella, a spin-off of the Arizona Daily Star for the Spanish-speaking community. Also reporting for The City of South Tucson’s bilingual newspaper El Independiente.
